I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.-John 10:10
Jesus promises us abundant life, but what does that mean? A more literal translation is "life upon life." I think many of us expect that "abundant life" would include plenty of money, kids that never get in trouble, and all our loved ones in good health.
But abundant life doesn't mean that we don't have problems. On the contrary... abundant life means that we get to experience every aspect of life! Abundant life or "life upon life" means that we will wake up to challenges each and every day.
Abundant life is when the child know as even more than "a handful" comes to your VBS and everyone pulls together to give that child a positive experience. Abundant life is trusting God to see you through a period of unemployment and bring you to a job that better serves his purpose for your life. Abundant life is when when of your children goes astray and through much prayer and love, he finally finds his way back. Abundant life is holding the hand of a loved one while they pass from this world to the next.
Many of us tend to be so afraid of abundant life, that we fail to experience it even when it is sitting in our laps. Instead, we wring our hands and worry. If we place our worry in Christ's hands we are free to experience that "life upon life" with a positive perspective... even when the experience itself seems far less than positive.
God gave us life and wants us to have it abundantly. Experience your abundant life today.
Lord,
Help us to experience with joy the abundant life you have given us, even when it is not what we expect abundant life to be. Thank you for being there to help us through the challenges. Amen.
