Our Plans

21 Many are the plans in a man's heart,
but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails. – Proverbs 19:21

It’s been said, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans!”  Most of us have enough life experience to say “Amen!” to that and probably even a “Thank you, Lord!” or two.  Left to our own plans, we are more likely to take the path of less toil and more pleasure.  But life is full of twists and turns that lead us down roads we never, ever considered.  Who among us would CHOOSE to have cancer?  And yet how many people do you know that have been through it say that although the disease itself is horrible, the process of walking through it was invaluable?

It seems that when our human plans don’t include God, God manages to make himself VERY included.  And when our plans DO include God in a way that only our human minds can devise, God shows us how very much more is possible and how limited and silly our own “big” plan is.

God gave us the ability to make plans, so it’s not wrong to do so.  But we need to leave plenty of room in them for God to work.  If we insist too much on our own way, God just might let us have our own way.  How tragic would that be?

Father,
Open our hearts to let you work within our own plans to make them bigger and better than anything our own minds could devise.  Amen.
